On a visit to Edinburgh, Scotland, I took a photo of a grave at Greyfriar's. Inscription: C.L. and only a year

I don't have the photo at the moment, as it's in another state, with other belongings, but the picture always haunted me. The grave was inconspicious, and I clearly remember the initials inscribed: C.L. and then the year, which I can't rightly recall, but it was either in the 1400's or 1500's. I am wondering if anyone who knows Scottish history could shed some light on why a headstone would only have intials and the year of death (I assume that's the year of death.). Could the person have been a criminal or an "undesirable"? I thought perhaps the person might have been homeless, without people knowing about their origins, but I gather that most people in that time era didn't go by initials. Perhaps this grave was a fluke, and I haven't been able to find out any info on a "C.L.". Was this a standard practice? I lived in the UK for several years and visited a lot of cemeteries in Ireland and the UK, and have yet to see another headstone with only initials.

Possibly marking a child’s grave. Tell me where about in the cemetery it is %26amp; I will find out for you if I can.

Contact the City Council. Read this;

PRICELESS records of Edinburgh's rich past could be lost forever because of staff shortages and inadequate storage at the city archive, leading Scots historians have warned.

Thousands of artefacts, detailing the history of the capital from the tenth century to the present day, are kept beneath the City Chambers and in a warehouse at Murrayburn.

Among some of the unique items contained in the council-owned archive are the first recorded rules for playing golf, city records for criminal convictions, NOTES ON THE GRAVES within Greyfriars burial ground and records about the establishment of the Edinburgh Festival.
Reply:Greyfriars is supposedly haunted. Take a look at these sites, they will provide you with plenty of information....

Reply:The headstone would have been for someone of some importance although unfortunately I cannot help you find out what the initials CL stand for. This would not be a poor person or a criminal because such people would be buried in unmarked graves and it is unlikely that such people would be interred at Greyfriars.

Unfortunately, there has been a lot of vandalism at Greyfriars in recent years and this has included the destruction of headstones and the exhumation of bodies.
Reply:The cost of engraving may have had something to do with it.
