Find standard emf of a galvanic cell : Sn electrode in a 1 M Sn(NO3)2 solution & Cu 1M Cu(NO3)2 solution @25°C

Sn2+ + 2e- ---%26gt; Sn Eo = -0.14 V

Cu2+ + 2e- ---%26gt; Cu Eo = +0.34 V

In a galvanic cell, the voltage is positve. So, reverse the first equation and add to the second to get a positive emf.

Sn ---%26gt; Sn2+ + 2e- Eo = +0.14 V

Cu2+ + 2e- ---%26gt; Cu Eo = +0.34 V

Overall reaction:

Sn + Cu2+ ---%26gt; Sn2+ + Cu Eo(cell) = +0.48 V
